The Mesa State softball team finished the weekend with a winning record after traveling to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to play New Mexico Highlands University. The Mavs are now 5-4 on the season and 3-1 in the RMAC.
On Saturday, Mesa State won both games 4-1 and 6-4. On Sunday the Mavericks lost the first encounter 11-3 and then blew out the Cowgirls 12-1.
“If we play the way we are supposed to, then it will be a good confidence booster,” Sara Jordan said during a practice leading up to the road trip.
Game one was a game of solid pitching and capitalizing on mistakes. The first mistake was made by NMHU when Mesa State’s Lita Romero reached third on an error. Gabriella Parra drove Romero home on a single in the first inning. The Mavs would go on to score three runs on three hits in the third inning. Jordan pitched a solid game, giving up six hits and only one unearned run, which came in the last inning.
The confidence would leak over into game two, but the game was a closer contest than the first. The NMHU coach pulled their starting pitcher in the third inning as she gave up nine hits and five earned runs. Mesa State coach, Kristen Mort, pulled pitcher Samantha Farris off in the fourth inning. Farris gave up five hits and four earned runs. Ashley Pulido would relieved Farris. Pulido got the win, giving up four hits and no runs.
Sunday did not start off as kindly for the Mavericks as Saturday did. Mesa State’s Jordan would pitch again, giving up 12 hits and 10 earned runs. The Mavs went ahead in the top of the second inning, two runs to one, but the game went downhill from there as they lost 11-3.
The final game of the weekend was a turn around of sorts. Mesa’s pitcher Farris threw a dandy, giving up four hits and one earned run, which came in the final inning. The Mav’s bats exploded with six runs and five hits in the third inning. Mesa State would go on to score three runs in the forth and fifth innings.
“As soon as we get our timing down at the plate, we are going to get a lot better,” Mort said.
The ladies play their first home series this weekend as the host University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday and Sunday.
