Softball lets three game winning streak end, falls to Regis

After snapping an eight-game skid and starting a three-game winning streak last weekend in Chadron, Neb., the Lady Mavs kept their bats alive in a weekend series against Regis University in Denver. After Gabriella Parra’s 21st RBI and Sara Jordan’s three RBI double in the fourth inning, it looked like the Mavs would surely get their fourth straight win. But with a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, they gave up six runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth, and lost 7-5.
“We just didn’t hit,” Jordan said. “Twelve strikeouts and 15 runners left on base. No lead is safe in this conference.”
The Mavs got their revenge in game two of Sunday’s double dip, as they won 9-5. The lineup shifted a lot as head coach, Kris Mort put in a lot of younger players. Lisa Pille hit a three-run homer in the second that gave the ladies a 5-1 lead. Parra brought in another run with a double in the third. After sloppy defense, the Maverick lead was only two, leading 7-5 in the fifth inning. When Jordan stepped up to the plate, her two-run home run all but sealed the victory for the Mavericks.
“I think it was a good decision that she changed the line up more,” catcher Stacy Ball said. “It helped change things up and helped put some more fire out on the field.”
The Mavs are now 7-9 overall, and 4-9 in conference play. They began the season ranked No. 22 in the country, but bad weather contributed to their losses.
“It hurts us big time,” Ball said. “When we are not able to play we don’t get them back and we need all the games possible to help out our regional ranking.”
The Mavs finished the series against Regis yesterday with a doubleheader. They are home for the first time in eight games on April 2 to host CSU -Pueblo in back-to-back of doubleheaders. This is the time of year when the games become more important.
“Yes, every game is now important to us,” Ball said. “I still feel like we have not peaked yet and our time will come.”
