The Aspinall Foundation has provided Mesa State social and behavioral science students scholarships for over 40 years. It has supported MSC’s educational mission since 1968.

This year the Aspinall Foundation offered over $20,000 in scholarships. To qualify, each student needed at least a 3.0 GPA and they needed to write an autobiography. Based on this information the social and behavioral science department voted on the autobiography they considered the best, and then the ones who are selected were interviewed by an Aspinall Foundation committee.

In addition to scholarships, the Foundation will host guest speaker Dr. Richard Etulain, professor of history from the University of New Mexico. His one credit course, March 29-April 26, highlights Abraham Lincoln and his important links with the American West. Etulain has authored or edited more than 40 books on historical topics. His most recent book is “Lincoln Looks West: From the Mississippi to the Pacific.” His writings have won several awards.

The slide illustrated lecture will be held at 7 p.m. April 8 in the Moss Performing Arts’ Recital Hall. Admission is free.

This year’s scholarship recipients will be honored during a reception before the presentation.

“(The Aspinall Foundation) is devoted to commemorating the spectacular congressional career of congressman Wayne N. Aspinall,” said Steven Schulte, professor of history and member of the Aspinall Foundation. “He was in congress from 1948-1972. He did important things for Colorado and the American West.”

Congressman Aspinall was one of Mesa County’s greatest leaders and was called Mr. Chairman for his years spent on congressional committees.
