MAVbikes started the school year as a big hit and continues this semester.
“The program is doing well; we have 36 bikes rented out right now. Several of the people have gone and brought bikes back and have gone out and bought their own bikes,” said Chad Thatcher, Outdoor Program coordinator. “It’s good to actually go out there and be commuters.”
The idea behind the program is to eliminate the excuse for not having a bike, or anything else for that matter, to get around campus or even town.
The Outdoor Program did a big survey on why people can’t commute. Everyone said it was because they didn’t have a bike. So if the program can eliminate that problem it will help resolve many parking issues.
This semester, only two bikes have been rented but almost everyone from last semester kept their bikes into this semester. Technically, the bikes are only permitted to be rented for one semester, but everyone came back and had their bikes inspected, then re-rented them.

s a $150 deposit and at the end of the semester if the bike is still in good condition the deposit is returned.
David Edwards, a senior secondary education major, who used the program last semester, thinks it’s great.
“I loved my bike. I returned it at the end of last semester. I used it just about every day just to get to across campus. I live in North Avenue which is a ways away from the recreation center which is where I work,” Edwards said.
The bikes come in four sizes. They have only one women’s size bike and then three men’s size bikes. They are still renting out bikes and hope to rent more in the upcoming spring semester.
