You need baseball.

You didn’t even know you needed baseball, but you need baseball.

You need a few hours out of your day where you can keep your phone in your pocket and not worry about it.

You need a beer and a hot dog and a good team.

You need baseball.

Lucky for you, the Colorado Mesa University baseball season has officially returned to Suplizio Field starting this Friday against Dixie State. You can finish your day of classes, sit in the stands and watch a team that is expected to contend for the NCAA Division II World Series like last year.

You’ll be able to see Maverick sports at their best.

I say you need baseball because I definitely need baseball and I’m not even a sports fan.

My pastime is keeping up with the daily national politics, kind of high stakes and not a lot of moments of victories. And my job… well, let’s just say my job does not allow many breathing opportunities.

So, when baseball season grew closer and closer, so did my excitement. I’m not going to keep track of the stats, the players, but, I will certainly be in those stands for every home game.

Because I need baseball.

I need a place of calmness and nostalgia that provides the simple pleasures in life: a cold beer, a hot dog in hand and my team beating the poor suckers who drove all the way out here.

Every day I work in high-stakes situations, dealing with difficult subjects. All the while keeping my academic career on track. It’s stressful. And I’m sure that other CMU students deal with a similar balance that leaves you looking for the calm release.

And because of that, you need baseball.

You need to take a few hours out of your day to enjoy something that doesn’t include Facebook, Instagram or Netflix – not to say that they’re bad – and connect in a real and direct way with your school and the people around you.

This is the last semester of my time at college, I need to enjoy these last few opportunities: a free baseball game, a few hours with my friends and the ability to switch off.

On Friday, put on your CMU gear, make the short walk from campus to Suplizio field. The game starts at 2:30 p.m. Get a beer, as long as you are 21. But, I shouldn’t have to tell you that. Along with the beverage, grab a hotdog and give yourself a few hours.

Because you deserve baseball.
