The Grand Junction Police Department is investigating several on-campus crimes committed in the past five days. Officers are investigating two suspicious males who stole someone’s personal belongings from the Maverick Pavilion on Sept. 27. These same two men were reported for selling fraudulent magazines one day later at the Orchard Avenue Apartments, on Sept. 28.
Dana Nunn, director or media relations, sent out a campus-wide email on Oct. 2 with photos of the two men, as well as more details regarding these incidents and another report of burglary and theft at the Walnut Ridge Apartments. This report stated that personal property was stolen after an unlawful entry occurred. It is currently unknown if these incidents are related, but all three are currently under investigation.
The email went out to all students, faculty and staff in compliance with the Clery Act, which states that an institution must send a “timely warning and emergency notification” to “aid in the prevention of similar crimes.”
Nunn’s email advised students, faculty and staff to take “normal safety precautions,” such as locking one’s room, walking with a friend in well-lit areas, locking bicycles or other personal vehicles and not leaving personal items out in plain view.
“I think it’s important for students to always be aware of their surroundings,” Nunn said in regard to the incidents. “We certainly encourage people to keep an eye on their belongings and, obviously, if you get someone knocking on your door trying to sell you something, you’ve got to use your common sense. You want to ask for ID, you want to verify that the people who are attempting to sell you something are legitimate, and that the product they are trying to sell you is also legitimate.”
