North Avenue to be renamed ‘University Boulevard’: Aug. 2017

Grand Junction City Council wanted to change North Avenue to University Boulevard beginning in August. 

 

 

Grand Junction hopes to make CMU 20,000 strong: Aug. 2017

The 20,000 movement was designed to expand the number of students attending CMU and boost the local economy. It was the work of the Grand Junction Chambers of Commerce. 

 

Fire destroys century-old home near CMU campus: Sept. 2017

The home that was said to be over 100 years old went up in flames on 15th street and Elm Avenue. 

 

 

CMU President Tim Foster’s DACA statement: Sept. 2017

Foster spoke out against the phasing out of the DACA act saying that CMU is a welcoming and accepting University.

Grievances filed between Criterion and ASG: Dec. 2017

After the sexually threatening messages were sent to a CMU student, Senator Richard Nguyen filed a grievance against The Criterion. The grievance was dismissed due to lack of evidence. 

 

 

CMU student dies from fall at GJ trampoline park: Jan. 2018

A CMU student fell 75 feet at the Grand Junction Indoor trampoline park. 

 

 

Bicyclist struck at crosswalk from campus: Jan. 2018

Riding eastbound across 12th Street, a female bicyclist was struck. The incident was the second such incident of the 2017-2018 academic year.

 

 

 

 

 

‘KOKOPELLI 4EVER,’ proclaims banner hung by likely tricksters: Jan. 2018

After two different voting attempts were hacked for the name of the new engineering building, the name “Confluence Hall” was chosen. Students who wanted a different name snuck up to the roof to hang banner. 

 

‘Unprofessional faculty departures’: Feb. 2018

Professors left CMU shortly before the beginning of the semester and even after the semester began causing classes to be cancelled or given to another faculty member. 

 

‘Please drop the story’: Feb. 2018

After hearing about an alleged assault by hockey team members, the coach responded to The Criterion by saying, “Please drop the story.” The better choice of words would have been, “no comment” 

 

KMSA misses payment, loses streaming: Feb. 2018

CMU radio station was not able to stream online after missing a payment. 

 

 

On-campus active shooter situation deemed false alarm: Feb. 2018

At a volleyball tournament in the Brownson arena, a speaker went out sending everyone into panic as they believed it to be gun fire. After evacuating and police onsight, the source was deemed a faulty speaker. 

 

GJHS student threatens to mimic actions in Florida shooting: Feb. 2018

A day after the Florida shooting, a student at Grand Junction High school threatened a shooting at the high school. 

 

 

 

 

Active shooter alert was delayed by software glitch: March 2018

After the false alarm the campus wide alert was delayed by a couple hours to students. Some had no idea what had gone on. 

 

 

Inconsistencies in ASG election rules lead to allegations against Flores and Vela: March 2018

Flores and Vela announced their candidacy for ASG president and vice president early, which may have violated the constitution, but the rules were unclear due to differences in ASG documents.

Some faculty members raised concerns about the changes to the CMU Professional Personnel Employment Handbook saying that it could give Foster ‘dictatorial powers.’

ASG presidential debates to air on CMU-TV: April 2018

A live debate hosted by Editor in Chief of The Criterion, Alec Williams, featured a debate between the two candidates for student trustee, ASG vice president and president. 

 

 

Administration requests support for student fee increase: April 2018

Vice President, John Marshall, requested support of ASG to raise students’ fees by 92 cents a credit hour. 

Officials: CMU budget won’t pay for deficit, students will: April 2018

The deficit due to increased online schooling will be made up by student fees, not the school’s fees. 

 

 

Mission for safety: April 2018

After student Bryn Lofness brought a concern to ASG about the locking system on campus doors, there will be changes made over the summer to improve safety in case of an emergency event.

Student involved in hit and run at Orchard apartments, police say: May 2018

A vehicle that belonged to a CMU student crashed into Orchard Avenue Apartments early in the morning. The owner was found and faces five charges.
