Well, the Mavs won, but the game was mediocre at best. The Colorado Mesa University baseball team won against Dixie State on Opening Day at Suplizio Field 14-5, but how was the opening game as far as turnout, weather, and environment goes?

Mediocre.

I watched the game from the sunny side of Suplizio Field, as did the other 75-100 or so who came out to see the game. There were an underwhelming amount of CMU baseball supporters at the opener, especially for how good our baseball team is.

The crowd was evenly split between CMU students and faculty and locals who came out to see the game. It seemed as if there was a good mix of old and young.

Many of the baseball games I have been to have had cheering fans from the stands, but this crowd just seemed as if they wanted to be left alone and watch the game in silence.

Apart from one fan in American flag overalls, the crowd was less than lively. Luckily, this particular fan was enthusiastic enough to carry the crowd and handed out Double Bubble in attempt to start cheers, which fell flat. He was actually probably the highlight of the game and provided entertainment for everyone in the stands.

Hopefully, the weather was to blame for a lack of fans and a lack of enthusiasm. At the beginning of the game, it was probably 40° F. When the wind wasn’t blowing, the sun was just enough to keep the bleachers warm. Unfortunately, it slowly got colder as the game went on.

It was not ideal beer and baseball weather, although that didn’t stop many from enjoying an overpriced brew.

CMU performed great, but it seemed like the 10,000 plus students at CMU forgot that part.

Baseball is the only sport I enjoy, but the lack of enthusiasm was a bit of a bummer. I would love to have been the cheerleader for them, but it’s kinda hard when nobody else is out there supporting.

Some fans, however, disagree with my assessment of the game turnout.

Tiana O’Connor, 21, said, “The first game of the season was incredibly fun. I think there wasn’t a huge turnout but that was probably due to a lack of advertisement. I didn’t even know the game was happening until the day of.”

The Mavericks are going to be great this year and there are more than a handful of home games to attend in which people need to get out and support such a great program.
