Dominance. The Colorado Mesa University Softball team traveled to Utah to take on Cal State East Bay for the first of a five-game weekend to kick off the season. After a quick rain delay, the Mavericks had no trouble getting the 14-1 win over the Pioneers.  The team was dominant at both the mound and the plate. Kimbri Herring had a strong first showing and freshman designated hitter, Jordan Hays, opened the floodgates.

The Mavericks bats were on fire scoring 14 runs on 10 hits. Senior Kaila Jacobs started it off when she hit a single down the left field gap to score fellow teammate Kellie Mrofcza in the first inning. Then come to the third, Jordan Hays, a Grand Junction native, had a 2-2 count and drilled a ball over the left field wall for her first hit and home run as a Maverick.

CMU had a big 4th inning that put the last seven runs on the board. Mrofcza also had a big night for CMU. Mrofcza hit 3 for 5 with a double and a pair of singles. Mrofcza and Jacobi both stepped up to the plate and knocked three runs each off of five at-bats.

The bats may have been working well, but someone had to put up a stellar pitching performance to keep the Pioneers from scoring. Pitcher Kimbri Herring did just that. Herring only gave up one run through five innings while allowing only four hits and striking out three batters

What is a game without defense? The Mavericks defense committed 0 errors to help secure the win while the Pioneers posted six.

The new season started out on a high note as a first victory is under the belt of new head coach Eric Kozel The Mavericks will look to continue their hope as they play their first doubleheader of the season in back-to-back games against Central Washington and Western Washington University.
