The Maverick Recreation Center is the state-of-the-art gym facility Colorado Mesa University students are offered free access to on campus.

The recreation center already has multiple different exercise rooms, equipment and spaces for the students to workout in. Now, the center is adding more.

The Maverick Center was recently under construction in order to make the facilities even more advanced than it already was.

Most students do not know of the area beyond the basketball courts which consists of racket ball and another studio. The former classroom that stood on the other side of one of the walls was given to the recreation center in which assisted in creating the new space.

“For our size of university we have an outstanding rec center,” said Director of Campus Recreation Lynn Wilson. “We don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable or uneasy in this place so the new space will help us out with that goal.”

The new space consists of 3,500 square feet and all the space is being used to the fullest potential. The new addition will have brand new cable pulley machines, TRX workout space, as well as more dumbbell racks.

Despite all the space that already exists in the Maverick Center, the gym and workout spaces do experience an ongoing problem of overwhelming crowds within the given areas.

The gym has busy hours from the late morning to the ten o’clock closing time every day. Athletes have to alternate their workouts based on how crowded the gym is and it continues to be a nuisance.

However this new added space assists in that problem more than people think.

“We constantly see on surveys that we need more space, more space, and more space,” Wilson said. “We need to be ahead of the game.”

The already existing additional workout spaces throughout the gym consist of cardio, crossfit, and free weight sections, along with the multiple studios where yoga, TRX, and cycling classes take place. Consequently they fill up quickly, but this new space has all of the above and it will not possess the common problem of crowdedness.

“Our main goal is no one feels uncomfortable,” Wilson said.

The space has plenty of room for new machines, stretching space, and another dumbbell section for all the lifters.

It appeals to anyone and everyone because of all the brand new features and capability of the added space. The Maverick Center is known for possessing multiple workout areas within the facilities that wind in and out of the gym where students can go to maintain their healthy lifestyle.

As Wilson stated, it is exactly what the Maverick Center needed.
