A letter from Party Smart

2021

Party Smart is a cooperative effort between Colorado Mesa University and the Grand Junction Police Department. This program is designed to help prevent students from receiving party-related tickets associated with disturbing the peace.

A registered party will get a notification with a 20-minute grace period to terminate the party after a noise complaint has been received. CMU and GJPD do not condone nor sponsor parties, but merely aid in preventing students from losing control.

To register a party a student needs to stop by the Student Life Office and fill out the appropriate form (due the Thursday before the event). After that, one of the party’s hosts will need to attend a 30-minute training class on how to safely be a party host and avoid receiving violations. This class only has to be attended once a year and, from that point on, students need only to separately register each party they plan on hosting.

Once a party is registered GJPD will have two points of contact. These contacts will only be used if the address has received a noise complaint. From there, GJPD will notify the hosts to terminate the party before other issues arise. If the hosts need help shutting down the party they are encouraged to call MavRides and ask the cars to make regular stops at their house. The GJPD can also aid in shutting down a party with no consequences to the hosts.

Party Smart is a great option for students tired of receiving party-related tickets. This program is frequently used and is proven to prevent students from receiving violations. The program also provides information, safe drinking tips and help handling gatherings that get out of control. Stop by the Student Life front desk for details.
