Associated Student Government President Beau Flores removed himself from the MavAwards nomination for Maverick of the year. He said his decision is based on the need to support clubs.

“I thought about it and I think this is a time where clubs need to be recognized,” Flores said. “Technically, it’s ASG’s event and I think that’s kind of silly to have the ASG president, who is putting on the event, win that award.”

Flores decision breaks away from last year, when Ben Linzey, ASG president at the time, won the award.

Two of the three nominations for Maverick of the year came from ASG. Now that Flores has removed himself from consideration, the remaining nominees are Riley Brodie, the Fee Allocation Committee chairman for ASG and Andrew Rapozo from the Student Veterans Association.

“The main [point] is to focus on the clubs and I think that SVA needs to be recognized,” Flores said.

Voting for the MavAwards closes Tuesday at 10 p.m. According to Flores votes cast for him on Monday will not count.
