Colorado Mesa University has over 30 club sports teams that compete on an annual basis. Multiple programs have been competing during the fall season and we figured we would get you caught up on what has been going on so far this semester.

Cycling

Probably one of the most successful athletic programs out of any club or varsity sports at CMU, the Mavericks are in midseason stride and are continuing to break records. Early this September, Evan Boone broke the 200m Junior National record at the Collegiate National Championships held in Colorado Springs, Colo. The original record was set in 1991 and remained unbroken for 27 years. Boone beat the record by obtaining a record of 42.678 mph.

The team’s next event is the CMU Rumble Bike Race at the Powderhorn Resort.

Baseball

RIght now they are in their fall schedule and are facing off against teams like Colorado State University and Western Nebraska Community College. Next weekend the team will be facing Eastern Utah State University.

Up until recently, there was a DI and a DII club baseball team.

“After the 2018 season, our director, Reese Kegans and I discussed the direction of the program. After much discussion, we decided to move forward with a Division 1 team only, and play primarily larger schools,” Head Coach Micheal Myers said.

Water Polo

CMU will be hosting the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Tournament Oct. 12 through Oct. 14.

Ice Hockey

The men’s ice hockey team score is sitting at 2-0. On Sept. 28 and 29 the team competed against the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and won back-to-back games against the Lobos.

The CMU team’s next match is Oct. 13 and they will face off against Air Force at the Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Men’s Rugby

The men’s rugby team score currently is 2-2. On Sept. 8 the team beat Colorado School of Mines 47-17 in what was their first victory against the Orediggers in years. They continued their impressive record when they competed against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sept. 16 by winning 65-19.

Since then, the Mavericks have lost two straight against formidable Western State and Montana State University.

The next game will be against the University of Northern Colorado on the home rugby pitch on Oct. 21.

The team will also be hosting a bone marrow fundraiser through Be the Match, an organization controlled by the National Marrow Donor program which manages the marrow registry and offers a cure for those diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers.

Women’s Rugby

The women’s rugby team is also currently sitting with a 2-1 record. On Sept. 8 the team faced off against Colorado School of Mines and beat them with an impressive score of 68-7. The women’s team competed in a friendly round-robin match against Air Force, Colorado State University-Pueblo and Western State and came out on top. So far the team’s only loss was to Brigham Young University’s DII women’s rugby team on Sept. 21

Coach Mackenzie Lewis attributes a good portion of their performance due to the captains being unable to compete due to injuries. Now that they are back, Coach Lewis anticipates the team to perform well.

Coach Lewis will be taking the women’s team to compete against Colorado College on Oct. 12 in Colorado Springs. The following weekend, on Oct. 20, the team will be playing against Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s club soccer team is part of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) League. The team keeps a roster of 25-20 girls and they aim to travel across the nation to compete in the NIRSA championships. The team will be heading to Gunnison, Colo. They will compete against Wyoming and Western at Western State Field Oct. 6-7.

Softball

The club softball team is starting off the year strong. On Sept. 27, two of CMU’s club softball players were recognized. Brett Johnson, a junior, was named Pitcher of the Week by the National Club Softball Association. In CMU’s debut conference series this season Johnson was unhittable for 12 total shutout innings and helped CMU defeat Wyoming.

Jenna Huisenga was also recognized by being named the Player of the Week for the Mid-America-West Conference held by the National Club Softball Association.
