On Oct. 6-8, Colorado Mesa University will host its annual Parents’ Weekend, where parents get to come, visit, and experience a piece of the university that their children attend. It gives parents a “flavor” of where their students are living and “what an amazing place this university is,” Director of Regional Development Peggy Lamm said.

“From sitting in on classes, to touring the Grand Valley and enjoying coffee with the President of the University, enjoy everything that Parents’ Weekend has to offer,” the CMU website says.

The three-day, multi-part event starts on Friday when parents are permitted to attend a select number of classes. The list of 46 available classes is on CMU’s website, for parents to reference ahead of time.

At 6 p.m. Friday, founders of the famed Bolder Boulder race Frank Shorter and Steve Bosley will be speaking in the University Center ballroom. Frank Shorter won the marathon gold medal for the United States at the 1972 Olympics, according to Lamm.

A one-mile fun run, named the Maverick Mile, will take place Saturday morning at 9 a.m., starting at the plaza and going around the perimeter of the campus. The CMU theatre department will also be performing their show, “A Grand Night for Singing,” on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m. The show is rated G, so it’s supposed to be friendly for everyone.

Additionally, the Colorado Mesa Maverick football team will be playing Black Hills State at Stocker Stadium at 1 p.m.

Other activities are listed on the University website and include Men’s and Women’s soccer, an Outdoor Program hike, an Intramural basketball tournament and several other events. Everything is free of charge unless otherwise listed on the website’s schedule of events.
