Colorado Mesa University was able to exact revenge on Concordia-Irvine Saturday, defeating them by a final score of 9-8. With the score tied up at 8-8 in the 10th inning, senior Garrett Ball singled up the middle, bringing in Nick Borowski to score and help the Mavericks take a 9-8 lead.

CMU took a 3-0 lead in the third inning following Reagan Todd’s solo home run to right center. Concordia responded in the bottom half of the third with a two-run home-run by Davis Tominaga, and a grand slam in the fourth inning by Dillon Millar to give Concordia a 6-3 lead.

Tanner Herdt struggled for CMU in his season debut, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits in three innings. Taylor Prokopis came on in relief and gave up three runs, three hits and two walks.

Down 6-8 in the eighth, the Mavericks clawed back to tie the game at 8-8 following a sacrifice fly from John Ballard and an RBI groundout from JJ Carr. Carr led the offense for CMU, going 3 for 6 and driving in three runs.

AJ Landis, who secured the win, stymied the Concordia offense for the last three innings. Landis limited the opposition to two hits, giving up no walks and striking out six. Landis retired the side in order in the bottom of the tenth and struck out Millar to seal the win for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks will finish the opening weekend and look to improve to 3-1 when they play UC-San Diego at Triton Ballpark at 12 p.m.
