The Colorado Mesa University business professor arrested last December on domestic violence, felony menacing and criminal mischief charges is now looking for a new attorney after an expected plea to the charges fell through.

David Pumphrey, 51, was arrested and charged on Dec. 3 for allegedly threatening his ex-girlfriend with a gun after an argument concerning Pumphrey’s new girlfriend at the time. The assistant professor of business returned to the classroom the Monday following the incident and has continued to teach at the university.

Pumphrey was scheduled for a plea hearing on April 14 where he was expected to provide a plea to the charges brought against him by the state, however, Pumphrey requested time to find a new attorney due to “conflict” with his current lawyer, Dan Chaser.

Pumphrey has remained in his position at CMU since his initial arrest and subsequent court appearances as the university is awaiting the outcome of the judicial process before making any decisions.

Pumphrey is expected in court on May 5 with presiding judge Gretchen Larson.
