Last Wednesday, students at Colorado Mesa University went to The Point from 5-8 p.m. to be welcomed by ladies wearing red CMU Mavericks shirts at the doorway. They could enter to find a crowd gathered around the bar with more ladies in red shirts and CMU President Tim Foster bartending behind the counter.

The event was the Brews for Sticks fundraiser for CMU’s women’s lacrosse team and the ladies in the red shirts were the players. Brews for Sticks included a live musical performance from Head Coach Shanta Loecker, trivia and games.

A jar sat out on the counter for any donations toward the lacrosse team as Foster poured beer alongside members of The Point’s regular staff. The event was designed for raising funds, as well as beneficial in raising awareness of the team, promoting their games.

The fundraiser was attended by well over 40 people, including a few faculty members. After Loecker’s piano and singing performance, Team Member Lula Mitchell led the crowd in trivia.

“In what year did CMU join the NCAA?” Mitchell asked the crowd.

“2011!” someone called, incorrectly as it turned out. A second person said “1995,” and a third said “1993.”

1993 was the correct answer.

Not all the questions were sports related, as questions like “All of President Foster’s children’s names start with the same letter. What is that letter?”

When the crowd was asked in which field President Foster received his master’s degree at The Colorado School of Mines, a few women ran up to Foster himself while he was behind the bar to get the answer.

“Are you allowed to ask me?” Foster asked the ladies. The women both instantly said yes, so Foster told them.

Additional fun facts revealed by trivia revealed that CMU’s first mascot the year the school was founded as Mesa College was a pioneer and that the school’s first sports team was football.

Brews for Sticks turned into a recreational time as people split off from the bar and utilized The Point’s Pool and Ping Pong tables.

Throughout the event, a projector continually showed the schedule for the season, which can also be found on the CMU Mavericks website at https://cmumavericks.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=377.
