As Intent to Run forms close for the Associated Student Government (ASG), candidates are being set and campaigns are being formulated. Apr. 8-9 Colorado Mesa University (CMU) students will be able to vote online for the respective positions of president, vice president, student trustee and student senators.

ASG Vice President Jeff Vela said, “The student government has the responsibility of overseeing a portion of student fees and distributing them to student organizations every two years. ASG also represents students directly to the school administration and is the direct line for change on campus.”

The most contested office is typically that of the student body president, who manages all aspects of ASG. “Last year we had approximately 40 candidates run,” Vela said. “I am hoping to get the same number of candidates who want to run this year as well.

The Vice President is second in command and assists the president, while the student trustee holds a place on the governing board of CMU as a representative of the student body. Senators assist clubs and organizations on campus, and represent their specific student populations, such as the freshman senator. Senators are also appointed as representatives of departments.

“This semester specifically, ASG is focusing on our satellite campuses and addressing certain issues that we have been seeing there,” Vela said, referring to the inclusion of the Montrose and WCCC camuses. “From the senate side of things, they are largely working on different legislative pieces to better our internal documents.”

Candidates will become known in the following weeks. After campaigns ramp up and voting commences, results will be announced after 5 p.m. on Apr. 9 to the student body through social media channels.
