Abary returns to help CMU get first road win

The Mavericks have seemed to shake off the bad Eastern New Mexico hangover as they win back-to-back games to improve to 2-1.

Colorado Mesa University’s men’s soccer team prevailed in a competitive game against Northwestern Nazarene University on Saturday. In their first road game of the season, the Mavericks prevailed with the 3-1 victory.

Coming off a scoreless loss to Eastern New Mexico University to start the year but then rebounding against Newman, The Mavericks knew this match wasn’t one to lose.

Lawan Abary was the first Maverick to strike with an outstanding goal in the 22nd minute. It was Abary’s first goal of the year and it comes at a relief as the forward has been battling a knee injury the last week but looked impressive on Saturday.

CMU’s defense was holding it down through and through, allowing only three shots on goals shots the entire game. Working as a team made scoring difficult for The Nighthawks.

The Mavericks again found success inside the goalie box in the 33rd minute. Ramses Atahualpa had the huge assist to Noah Rosenberg who headed it in off the corner for CMU’s second goal on the game.

NNU still continued to struggle on both the offensive and defensive end with the start of the second period. Struggling to get something going they seemed to have no answer for The Mavericks 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks, moreover, continued to bring the pressure.

In the 68th minute, Ramses Atahualpa has his third assist on the night as the nail in the coffin was made by Alec Fronapfel to make it a 3-0  with only about 15 minutes left in the match.

The Nighthawks would eventually find success in the 78th minute to get on the board but it was too little too late.

The Mavericks were able to to close out this much needed win while showing their ability to score in various ways and their willingness to play unselfish soccer.

CMU finished the game with nine total shots with five of them being on goal. The Mavericks will be taking on Fort Lewis College on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in first RMAC game.
